Beyond K-12

M.E.F.T. Labs extends its programs to colleges and universities, helping academic institutions integrate mycology into curricula spanning environmental science, biology, sustainable agriculture, and entrepreneurship. We support student and faculty research into fungal applications in bioremediation, sustainable food systems, and biotechnology, and guide colleges interested in building on-campus mushroom farms for education, research, or food production. Our work also extends into interdisciplinary studies, connecting mycology to ecological restoration, plant pathology, and broader ecosystem impacts, while exposing students to career paths in mycology research, cultivation, and environmental consulting.

For those who want to explore mycology at home, M.E.F.T. Labs offers accessible grow kits and simplified guides that let you experience the fungal life cycle firsthand — a hands-on way to build a deeper connection to nature and sustainable practices.

Growing mushrooms at home is simpler than it sounds. Start with a M.E.F.T. Labs kit designed for beginners, then follow its instructions to activate growth. From there, mist regularly to maintain humidity while you watch the mycelium colonize the substrate and mushroom pins begin to emerge. Once the mushrooms mature — before their caps fully flatten — gently twist and pull them from the substrate, then cook and enjoy your harvest. Many kits will produce multiple flushes, so one kit can yield several rounds of mushrooms. It's a simple, tangible way to see biological growth and mycology principles in action, making it a great activity for any age.
